Ivan Pigarev: Study of sleep and the principles of the organization of the cerebral cortex
What we still do not know about dreams
A few years ago, a rather strange situation developed in the field of sleep research. On the one hand, the most obvious and simplest theory of sleep, according to which sleep is required in order to rest the brain, has disappeared for a long time.
This theory existed exactly until they learned to fix the activity of brain neurons. As soon as it became possible, it immediately became clear that during sleep, neurons in the cortex work even more actively than in the waking state. The theory has been dropped.
